PGDIM -Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management

Ever since their inception, B-Schools are focused on developing managers with specialized knowledge. The Indian industry has thus had either good engineers who know the ins and outs of technology, or managers who are well versed only in management. In today's dynamic world, however, such specialization definitely leads to a disadvantage. What organizations seek today are managers who possess cross-functional skills as well as an in-depth appreciation of the human and technological factors. To answer this need, NITIE started a two year Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management in 1994. This course is approved by AICTE.

Ranked amongst the best management courses in the country, the PGDIM programme (or simply IM) has produced business leaders within its relatively short existence. The course has been modeled along the lines of the general management program at MIT Sloan School of Management. The present curriculum has undergone continuous fine-tuning in line with the requirements of the dynamic business environment. The course incorporates a wide range of electives providing the students an opportunity to pursue their functional areas of interest. Since its inaugural campus, PGDIM has emerged as a preferred choice of students and recruiters alike with an extremely enviable placement record.

OBJECTIVES

  • To develop a holistic outlook that views the organization as an entity with a mission and not as a composition of fragmented functional areas.
  • To develop interpersonal and leadership skills to competently manage human aspects inherent in complex organizational issues and problems.
  • To develop expertise in scientific management methodologies, hone quantitative and analytical skills so as to enhance managerial effectiveness.

COURSE STRUCTURE

INDUSTRY & MARKET INTERFACE

Every NITIE graduate spends almost 25 per cent of the programme (about six months) getting hands-on experience. It starts with the mandatory two month long summer internship in the first year. This is similar to what all B-schools do. However, it is the second year which gives NITIE students the real edge. They are required to do a four month long winter internship with a company at the end of their academic year. The faculty makes sure that by then all the classroom teaching is over. However, they continue to monitor the progress of the students. Both a company guide as well as a faculty guide is appointed to oversee the students. This added exposure gives the students a tremendous head-start in the industry.

To say that the hands-on experience is limited to two formal events alone would be wrong. Every new recruit here learns this in the first module itself through the 'Mandi' initiative. Students are also encouraged to take up industry sponsored weekend projects during the duration of the course. This is where NITIE leverages its alumni relations. The alumni come back to the institute with real-life managerial problems which then become weekend projects for students.
